Australian Open 2026 men's singles final: Carlos Alcaraz writes history in win over Novak Djokovic - as it happened

Australian Open 2026 - Alcaraz clinches victory and maiden Melbourne Park title

22:48 - Alcaraz 2-6, 6-2, 6-3, 7-5 Djokovic - game, set, match Alcaraz

The 12th game starts with a jaw-dropping 25-point rally, only curtailed as Djokovic's shot does not make it over the net. He draws back to 15-15 but a wide forehand puts Alcaraz back ahead.

Another unforced error gives Alcaraz championship point. After missing his first serve, Djokovic hits his second one down the middle where Alcaraz returns. But the Serbian tries to rip a forehand down the line and it is wide.

That is it! Alcaraz has made history and won his first crown in Melbourne. Your 2026 Australian Open men's singles champion is Carlos Alcaraz!

22:39 - Alcaraz 2-6, 6-2, 6-3, 6-5 Djokovic

There is no break just yet in set four, as Djokovic digs deep to keep the score level. Will we get a first break point converted, or could it be a tiebreak to settle the score?

Alcaraz holds, and we are back to Djokovic's serve to keep the title fight going.

22:34- Alcaraz 2-6, 6-2, 6-3, 5-4 Djokovic

How about this...Djokovic has his first break point of the fourth set. With huge celebrations between points, he must now settle himself down.

On Alcaraz's second serve, he cannot find the angle and we go to deuce. The 22-year-old comes back with a stunning forehand winner inside the service box, and he converts the advantage to hold.

Djokovic will serve after the changeover to stay in it, Alcaraz will return with a shot at the title. Stay tuned...

22:27 - Alcaraz 2-6, 6-2, 6-3, 4-4 Djokovic

Alcaraz has raced into a 30-0 lead on Djokovic's serve, this could be huge. The Serbian responds with a forehand winner and a massive serve to level it up with unreal composure.

We go to deuce and Djokovic goes big to hold and give himself breathing space.

22:19 - Alcaraz 2-6, 6-2, 6-3, 3-3 Djokovic

Since that remarkable second game, there has not been a single break point set up by either player. Djokovic knows that he needs to find a breakthrough in this set, while Alcaraz is patiently waiting for his moment.

22:05 - Alcaraz 2-6, 6-2, 6-3, 1-1 Djokovic

The tension is building inside Rod Laver Arena as Djokovic faces two break points from 15-40. Once again he saves them, before salvaging a third with a smashed volley right on the baseline.

Alcaraz is not keen to miss the chance of an early break though, disguising his drop shot superbly for break point number four. Djokovic fends it off with an ace and saves another two break points.

After 12 minutes and six break points saved, the Olympic champion converts his second advantage for a quite simply remarkable hold game.

21:51 local time (AEDT, GMT+11) - Alcaraz 2-6, 6-2, 6-3, 1-0 Djokovic

Djokovic needed some medical attention in the set changeover, calling over the trainer but not requiring a medical time out. Alcaraz holds in the first game, sitting a set away from the career Grand Slam.
